The November 2023 election is a huge opportunity to address our housing shortage and elect pro-housing candidates across Virginia. Our members have voted! YIMBY Action and our Virginia chapters are excited to announce our endorsement of the following pro-housing candidates.
Explanations for endorsements are below.
Virginia House of Delegates District 94
YIMBY Hampton Roads is pleased to announce our support for Phil Hernandez for Delegate in Norfolk’s 94th House District. Phil is a longtime advocate for tenant rights and understands how the lack of new housing supply contributes to continuous pressure on Virginia families. Phil is passionate about expanding funding for affordable housing projects, increasing protections for tenants, and decreasing the red tape in housing production. Phil supports ending exclusionary zoning, increasing by-right development for ADU’s, and reducing costly impact fees on new housing. We look forward to working with a future Delegate Hernandez to ease the housing cost burden in our community.
Virginia House of Delegates District 93
YIMBY Hampton Roads is pleased to announce our support for Jackie Hope Glass in Virginia’s 93rd House district. Delegate Glass is a self-described “Certified Doer” she believes in putting her money where her mouth is and taking action on her beliefs. Delegate Glass views a 3 step approach to solving the housing affordability crisis as integral to a long-term success. These steps include ending exclusionary zoning and promoting both market rate and affordable developments in neighborhoods throughout the city; strengthening tenant protections and increasing incomes. Delegate Glass is a strong supporter of Missing Middle Housing, ADU’s, and reducing the red tape that prevents a much-needed increase in the housing supply. We look forward to working with Delegate Glass to create positive changes in our city, region, and state.
Virginia State Senate District 21
YIMBY Hampton Roads is pleased to announce our support for Angelia Williams Graves for Senate in Virginia’s 21st Senate District. Angelia William Graves is a lifelong Norfolk resident and is passionate about our city. She has expressed concern about the lack of affordable housing in our region and understands the importance that every person has access to a safe and affordable place to call home. Although she has expressed skepticism in the past around ADU’s, she is passionate about fighting the legacy of redlining and believes zoning reform will play a role in creating a more equitable future for our region. Delegate Graves understands that the affordable housing issue persists throughout the state and is not simply a rural vs. urban, nor a Republican vs. Democrat issue, as such she is committed to working with both sides of the aisle to create the change Virginians need. We look forward to working with future Senator Graves to create a brighter future for every Virginian by making access to safe and affordable homes easier than ever.
